A Guide to Babywear Fabrics: Bamboo Muslin, Bamboo Cotton & Cotton Waffle

What bamboo muslin, bamboo cotton and cotton waffle actually feel like on a baby, and how to pick the best fabric for baby clothes in every Indian season.

8 min read

Ask ten parents what the best fabric for baby clothes is and you'll get ten answers, usually followed by a brand name. Search online and it gets worse. One page says bamboo is "three times softer", another says it's "three degrees cooler", a third says it kills bacteria. Most of them don't say where those numbers come from.

We make baby clothes in three fabrics: bamboo muslin, bamboo cotton and cotton waffle. So this is our attempt at the guide we wanted when we started. What each fabric actually is, how it feels on a baby, when it works well, and when you'd pick something else. No lab claims we can't back up.

Why does babywear fabric matter?

Babies spend almost the whole day and night in their clothes, and their skin is thinner and more delicate than ours. So the fabric of baby clothes matters more than the print on them.

A good babywear fabric does a few simple things well:

  • It feels soft against the skin, including at the seams, cuffs and neckline.
  • It lets air through, so a baby doesn't get sweaty and sticky, especially in Indian summers.
  • It moves or stretches a little, so crawling, kicking and rolling feel easy.
  • It survives a lot of washing. Baby clothes get washed far more often than ours.

Fabric isn't the only thing, of course. Fit, seams and easy openings matter too, and we cover those in our guide on how to choose baby clothes. But if you get the fabric right, most of the rest gets easier.

Bamboo muslin: lightweight, soft and breathable

Bamboo muslin is a light, loosely woven fabric made from bamboo-based fibre, sometimes blended with cotton. It's the airiest of the three fabrics we use.

Muslin is an old weave. In many Indian homes it's known as mulmul, and grandmothers have been wrapping babies in it for generations. The weave is open, which is why it feels so light and why air moves through it easily. It also has that soft, slightly crinkled look that doesn't need ironing.

A few things parents usually like about muslin baby clothes:

  • They're very light, so they're comfortable in hot, humid weather.
  • The open weave dries fairly quickly after washing, which helps in monsoon.
  • Muslin tends to get softer with washing rather than rougher.

Where it's less ideal: muslin is thin, so on its own it isn't much of a layer for cold nights or a chilly AC room. And because it's so light, it drapes rather than holding a structured shape. That's why it's lovely for wrap tops, loose sets and swaddles, and less useful for anything that needs to stand up on its own.

Our Bamboo Muslin Baby Coord Set (6–9 months) uses it for a wrap-style top with three wooden buttons and relaxed, full-length bottoms.

Bamboo cotton: softness for everyday babywear

Bamboo cotton is a blend of bamboo-based fibre and cotton, usually knitted rather than woven, so it has a smooth feel and a bit of natural stretch.

Most bamboo fabric is made by breaking bamboo down into pulp and spinning it into fibre, often called bamboo viscose or rayon. Blending that with cotton gives a fabric that feels smooth and cool to touch, drapes softly, and still has some of cotton's body.

It's a good all-rounder for baby clothes that get worn all day:

  • The stretch makes it easy to get arms and legs in and out.
  • It feels smooth on the skin, which many parents like for sleepwear.
  • It's comfortable across most of the year, with a layer on top in winter.

A fair word on the big claims you'll see online. Some sellers call bamboo antibacterial, hypoallergenic or temperature-regulating. Those depend on how the fabric was made and tested, and we don't make those claims for ours. What we can say is that it's soft, light and breathable, and that's what our customers notice. If your baby has eczema or very sensitive skin, your paediatrician is the right person to ask about fabrics.

Our Bamboo Cotton Baby Romper (6–9 months) is made in this fabric, with snap buttons at the shoulders and the crotch for easy dressing and nappy changes.

Cotton waffle: texture, comfort and everyday style

Cotton waffle is cotton woven or knitted into a raised, square grid pattern, a bit like a tiny honeycomb. It's the most textured of the three.

That grid gives waffle a slightly cushioned, spongy feel and more body than muslin. The little pockets in the weave hold a touch more warmth, so waffle is a nice middle ground between very light muslin and a heavier knit. It also keeps its shape well, so a waffle outfit tends to look neat all day.

Where waffle shines:

  • Everyday wear in air-conditioned rooms, or on cooler mornings and evenings.
  • Outings and visits, when you want your baby to look a bit put together.
  • Parents who like texture. It photographs beautifully.

On very hot, humid afternoons, muslin will usually feel lighter. But in most homes with a fan or AC running, waffle is comfortable for a lot of the year.

Our Cotton Waffle Baby Coord Set (3–6 months) has a full-sleeve top with colour-matched front buttons and full-length bottoms with an elasticated waist.

How different babywear fabrics feel

If you could only touch them, here's roughly how they'd compare:

  • Bamboo muslin: feather-light, airy, a soft crinkle. The coolest on hot days.
  • Bamboo cotton: smooth, silky, stretchy. Feels cool to the touch and moves with the baby.
  • Cotton waffle: textured, soft and a little cushioned. The warmest of the three and holds its shape best.

A simple way to test any baby fabric in a shop, or when a parcel arrives: rub it gently on the inside of your wrist or your cheek. If it feels scratchy there, it'll feel scratchy on your baby too. Then hold it up to the light. The more light passes through, the lighter and airier it'll be.

Whatever fabric you choose, wash new baby clothes once before the first wear and follow the care label.

The best fabric for baby clothes, by style and season

There isn't one best fabric for all baby clothes, and that includes cotton baby clothes, which come in many weaves and weights. It depends on what the outfit is for and when your baby will wear it. Here's how we think about it:

  • Rompers and sleepsuits: bamboo cotton, because the stretch makes dressing easy and it's comfortable for sleep and crawling.
  • Loose, wrap-style sets for hot days: bamboo muslin, for the lightest possible feel.
  • Sets for everyday wear, AC rooms and outings: cotton waffle, for a bit of warmth and a neat look.
  • Swaddles and wraps: muslin, since it's light and breathable. Always follow safe-swaddling basics, which we explain in our muslin swaddle guide.
  • Shorts and play clothes: ribbed cotton, which is stretchy, soft and easy to pair with a tee or bodysuit.

And by season in India:

  • Summer: muslin first, bamboo cotton second.
  • Monsoon: lighter fabrics that dry quickly, so muslin and bamboo cotton.
  • Winter: bamboo cotton or waffle as a base, with a warmer layer on top when needed.

A common rule of thumb is to dress a baby in about one more layer than you're comfortable in. To check they're not too hot or cold, feel the back of their neck or their tummy rather than their hands and feet, which often feel cool anyway.

If you're choosing between the two coord sets, we've put muslin and waffle side by side.

New fabrics at KAVS: what's coming next

We're a small team, so we add new fabrics slowly and only once we're happy with how they feel after plenty of washes. Next up are bamboo muslin swaddles, in Butter Yellow, Sage Green and Terra Cota.

We're also trying out other fabrics for new pieces. When something is ready, you'll hear about it first on our Instagram and here in the Little Notes. You can see everything that's available now on our website.

FAQs

What is the best fabric for baby clothes?

There's no single best fabric. For most Indian homes, soft, breathable natural fabrics work best: muslin for hot weather, bamboo cotton for everyday wear and sleep, and cotton waffle for cooler rooms and outings. Pick based on the season and what the outfit is for.

Is muslin or cotton better for babies?

Muslin is usually a type of cotton (or a cotton blend) woven loosely, so it's lighter and airier than regular cotton. It's better for hot days and swaddles. A closer-knit cotton is better when you want a little more warmth or structure.

Is bamboo fabric good for babies?

Many parents like bamboo baby clothes because they're soft, smooth and light, with a little stretch. Claims that bamboo is antibacterial or hypoallergenic depend on how the fabric is made and tested, so treat them carefully. If your baby has very sensitive skin, ask your paediatrician.

What is mulmul fabric?

Mulmul is the Hindi name for a very fine, soft, loosely woven muslin. It's traditionally used in India for baby clothes, swaddles and summer wear because it's so light and breathable.

Which fabric is best for baby clothes in summer in India?

Muslin (mulmul) is the lightest and airiest choice for Indian summers, followed by bamboo cotton. Loose fits help too, so air can move around your baby.

Where can I buy bamboo and muslin baby clothes online in India?
