Baby Clothes Checklist: What Do You Really Need?
A newborn baby clothes checklist for India: how many clothes a newborn needs, what to buy for 0–3, 3–6 and 6–12 months, hospital bag clothes and what you can skip.
Almost every parent we talk to says the same thing about the first few months. They bought far too many newborn clothes, not enough of the plain everyday ones, and at least one outfit that was never worn because it had seventeen buttons.
So here's a newborn baby clothes checklist that tries to fix that. Real quantities, split by stage, with the reasoning behind each number, so you can adjust it for your home, your weather and how often you do laundry. Use it as your newborn shopping list, and there's a short list of things you can happily skip at the end.
How many outfits does a baby need?
For the first three months, most babies need around 6 to 8 everyday outfits, if you do laundry every two or three days. That's the honest short answer to how many clothes a newborn needs.
The number comes from simple maths. A newborn can easily go through two or three outfits a day, between nappy leaks, spit-up and feeds. Multiply that by the days between washes, and add one or two spares for the day the laundry doesn't dry. Wash daily and you can manage with fewer. Wash twice a week and you'll want more.
A few things push the number up or down:
- Monsoon: clothes take much longer to dry, so add two or three extra outfits.
- Winter in North India: you'll need layers on top, but the base outfits don't change much.
- Cloth nappies: they're bulkier and leak a little more often, so size up and add a couple of spares.
- Help at home: if someone else is washing and folding, you can keep fewer in rotation.
And remember that newborns grow quickly. Many babies are out of 0–3 months sizes within a few weeks, so don't buy a big pile in the smallest size. Our guide on how to choose baby clothes explains how baby clothes sizes work and why sizing up usually makes sense.
The newborn baby clothes checklist, by stage
Here's a simple baby clothes list for India. Treat the numbers as a starting point, not a rule.
0–3 months
- Jhablas or front-open tops: 4 to 6. Easy for the first weeks, when you're still nervous about tiny arms.
- Rompers or bodysuits: 6 to 8. The backbone of the wardrobe.
- Soft pyjamas or bottoms: 4 to 5, to pair with jhablas and tops.
- Swaddles: 3 to 4 muslin swaddles, which you'll also use as burp cloths and covers.
- Caps: 2 to 3, mostly for outings and cooler rooms.
- Socks or booties: 3 to 4 pairs.
- Mittens: 2 to 3 pairs, useful for the first weeks while nails are sharp.
- Warm layers (winter only): 2 sweaters or jackets.
3–6 months
- Rompers: 5 to 7.
- Coord sets or two-piece outfits: 3 to 4, as a separate top and bottom starts to make sense.
- Sleepwear: 3 to 4 soft full-sleeve pieces.
- Warm layers (winter only): 2 to 3.
6–12 months
- Coord sets and rompers: 6 to 8 in total, depending on what your baby moves best in.
- Shorts or pants: 3 to 4, easy to pair with a tee or bodysuit.
- Sleepwear: 3 to 4.
- An outfit or two for occasions: family functions, pujas and visits.
Everyday babywear essentials
Most of your baby's days will be spent in the same few types of baby clothes. These are the baby wardrobe essentials worth getting right.
Rompers
A romper is a one-piece outfit with legs, and it's the easiest thing to dress a baby in. Look for snaps at the crotch for nappy changes and snaps at the shoulder or a front opening so nothing gets pulled over the head. A few full-sleeve rompers are useful for AC rooms, naps and mosquito season, and a light fabric keeps them comfortable in summer. We've written a whole baby romper guide if you'd like to go deeper.
Coord sets
A coord set is a matching top and bottom. From around three months, a set is handy because you can change just one half after a leak. Soft coord sets also double as night suits. We compare our bamboo muslin and cotton waffle coord sets in a separate note.
Swaddles
Muslin swaddles earn their place long after the swaddling months. Burp cloth, nursing cover, a clean layer for tummy time. If you do swaddle, stop as soon as your baby starts trying to roll, and keep the hips loose. Our muslin swaddle guide has the safety basics.
Extra outfits for messy days
Every parent has a day where nothing stays clean for more than an hour. That's why a couple of spares are worth keeping aside:
- Two spare outfits in the nappy bag, rolled up, plus a muslin.
- One spare in the car or at the grandparents' house, if you visit often.
- Easy bottoms, since that's usually what needs changing after a leak.
- Darker or printed colours for outings. They hide the small marks you didn't notice.
Coord sets help here, because you only swap the half that got messy.
Clothes for sleep, play & outings
Sleep
For sleep, keep it simple: soft, well-fitting clothes suited to the room temperature, with no loose blankets in the cot. A light full-sleeve romper or coord set works for most nights with a fan or AC. In a cold North Indian winter, add a warmer layer rather than piling on blankets, and check the back of your baby's neck to make sure they aren't too hot. Always follow your paediatrician's advice on safe sleep.
Play
Once your baby is rolling and crawling, pick clothes that move. Stretchy rompers, relaxed coord sets, and shorts with a soft top on hot days. Knees get a lot of floor time, so full-length bottoms help on hard floors.
Outings
For outings, think about the journey as well as the destination. A light layer you can add in an air-conditioned mall or car, a cap, socks, and one spare outfit. A slightly neater set, like a waffle coord set, is nice for family visits and photos.
Hospital bag baby clothes
For the hospital bag, pack 2 to 3 soft front-open outfits or rompers in newborn size, a cap, socks, mittens, a couple of swaddles, and a going-home outfit. Pack a warm layer in winter. Check with your hospital too, since some provide the first set of clothes.
Building a practical baby wardrobe
A good baby wardrobe isn't the biggest one. It's the one where almost everything gets worn. A few things that help:
- Start small and add as you go. Buy the basics before the baby arrives, then fill the gaps once you know your routine.
- Buy ahead in sizes. Keep most of your purchases for 3–6 and 6–9 months, since newborn sizes are outgrown fast and you'll probably receive plenty as gifts.
- Stick to easy fabrics. Soft, breathable fabrics like muslin, bamboo cotton and cotton waffle are comfortable for most of the year in India. Our guide to babywear fabrics compares them.
- Choose colours that mix. A few soft shades that go together mean any top works with any bottom.
- Plan by season. If your baby will be six months old in December, the 6–9 months clothes need to be warm ones.
- Wash before the first wear, and follow the care label.
What you can skip
- Lots of newborn-size baby clothes. A handful is enough.
- Stiff party dresses and tiny jeans for the first months. They look sweet and rarely get worn.
- Clothes with lots of buttons down the back, or anything that goes on over the head with a tight neck.
- Shoes before your baby is walking. Socks or soft booties are enough.
- Anything with cords, loose bows or sequins, for safety.
FAQs
How many clothes does a newborn need?
Around 6 to 8 everyday outfits, like rompers or bodysuits, is enough for most newborns if you do laundry every two or three days. Add a few more in monsoon, or if you wash less often.
What clothes do I need for a newborn in India?
A few jhablas or front-open tops, 6 to 8 rompers or bodysuits, some soft bottoms, 3 to 4 muslin swaddles, caps, socks and mittens. In winter, add a couple of sweaters or jackets.
How many jhablas does a newborn need?
Four to six jhablas is plenty for the first weeks. Many babies move to rompers and bodysuits after the first month or two, so there's no need to buy a lot.

Two or three soft front-open outfits or rompers in newborn size, a cap, socks, mittens, a couple of swaddles and a going-home outfit. Add a warm layer in winter.
